Lander Valley seeking to make its fifth straight playoff appearance
LANDER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – Since John Scott arrived at Lander Valley as the head football coach in 2018, the Tigers have been a fixture in the 3A state playoffs. Scott’s teams have reached the quarterfinals every year under his guidance, but they have been unable to get out of the first round.
“If we can do that, I think we can prove something to people,” said Brenon Stauffenberg, the Tigers’ senior quarterback. “I think that the biggest thing is getting a playoff win.”
2022 Prep Athlete to Watch For Gabe Harris, a fellow senior and one of Stauffenberg’s best friends, said that he wants to push Lander Valley football to that next level as well.
“I just want to bring everybody together and make a good future for Lander too,” said Harris. “But winning games is a big thing of course and that’s probably the main thing, and I want to get a playoff win.”
The Tigers are coming off of a 4-5 season in 2021 and will have 44 players and 11 seniors on this year’s roster. Stauffenberg also said there’s some redemption at stake for his senior class.
“I think everyone thinks we’re a down year,” said Stauffenberg. “I think we graduated a lot of seniors, and I think the seniors this year really want to succeed and to prove [to] people that it’s not a down year and we have something, too.”
Stauffenberg’s group showed that they have a little something in a 54-0 shellacking of 2A Pinedale in a scrimmage last Friday. The team will open the regular season on Friday on the road at Green River at 7 p.m.
