Watch Red Hot Chili Peppers Perform “Black Summer” and “Can’t Stop” at VMAs 2022

Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage tonight (August 28) at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards to play “Black Summer” and “Can’t Stop” at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. They were introduced by Cheech and Chong, who referenced the band’s infamous set performing while wearing tube socks on their genitalia. The performance marked Red Hot Chili Peppers’ first at the VMAs since 2000, when they received the Video Vanguard Award and performed their hit “Californication.”

In addition to the performance, Red Hot Chili Peppers were the recipients of this year’s Global Icon Award. “I want to dedicate this to Taylor Hawkins and his family,” said drummer Chad Smith during his part of the acceptance speech. “Fly on, Hawk. Fly on, brother.” Smith notably played a drum kit emblazoned with an eagle and the word “Taylor” as a tribute to the late Taylor Hawkins during their VMAs set. Flea also gave an exuberant speech shouting out everyone he loves, including cockroaches, dirt, and deer antlers.

In March, Red Hot Chili Peppers returned with Unlimited Love, their 12th studio album and first album in six years. The album included singles “Black Summer” “Poster Child,” “Not the One,” and “These Are the Ways,” and will soon be followed by Return of the Dream Canteen, the band’s second album of 2022. The latter album will include the band’s latest single, “Tippa My Tongue.”
