Devils Tower is the first United States national monument established in 1906. It is also referred to as Mato Tipila (Bear Lodge). The tower is a popular tourist attraction and a rock climbing destination. Devils Tower is situated in the state of Wyoming. The tower is considered sacred by the Native American tribes. The landscape surrounding Devils Tower is composed mostly of sedimentary rocks.

🤔 Park Information (What to do)
There are 5 trails in the national monument. The most popular trail is the Tower Trail, which goes around the Devils Tower. It is an easy 1.3 mile paved loop around the Devils Tower. The trails offers close up views of the tower and the sweeping views of the prairies. The trail access is from the visitor center parking lot or Red Beds Trail.
Other trails are South Side Trail, Valley View Trail,Red Beds Trail,Joyner Ridge Trail.
The Devils Tower National Monument is also a popular night sky viewing spot. You can stay at KOA which is just next to the entrance of the monument.

According to the Native American tribes of the Kiowa and Lakota, a group of girls went out to play and were spotted by several giant bears, who began to chase them. In an effort to escape the bears, the girls climbed on the top of a rock, fell to their knees, and prayed to the Great Spirit to save them. Hearing their prayers, the Great Spirit made the rock rise from the ground towards the heavens so that the bears could not reach the girls. The bears, in an effort to climb the rock, left deep claw marks in the sides, which had become too steep to climb. Those are the marks which appear today on the sides of Devils Tower. When the girls reached the sky, they were turned into the stars.
