RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — In this episode of 8Arts and Culture, Video Editor Catrice Roots spoke to D’Angelo’s former promoter, Thomi Hairston — Fat Thomi — who shared his memories working with the legendary singer early in his career.
On Tuesday, Oct. 14, legendary R&B, Neo-Soul and gospel singer — and Richmond native — D’Angelo has reportedly died at age 51.
Hairston reportedly worked closely with D’Angelo for his debut album, “Brown Sugar,” released in 1995. The album earned D’Angelo four Grammy Award nominations and is now regarded by music journalists as a pivotal release in neo soul.
Thomas also worked for many other well-known record labels throughout his life and is currently teaching a course on hip-hop at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).
