Dhillon – the latest addition to the list of Indian-Americans in the incoming Republican administration – has been alleged in the past to espouse pro-Khalistan sentiment. She is accused by her critics of sympathising with the cause of Khalistan and helping Khalistanis based in the US.
In 2023, reacting to a Wall Street Journal report, Dhillon had posted on X, “Update on India’s death squad project, which has claimed the life of at least one Canadian Sikh activist, and which targeted another in the US. Will there be consequences? Prosecutors Charge Indian Man With Trying to Kill Sikh Activists in US.”
In another post on X the same year, reacting to an article in the Financial Times, Dhillon wrote, “Like I said, India has sent death squads to target North American Sikhs outspoken on civil and human rights conditions in Punjab, both to Canada and now the US. Will our government do anything about it, or just pander endlessly over artificial DEI nonsense? Lives are at risk!” People in the know said it needs to be monitored how Dhillon shapes up in her new role.
“Harmeet has stood up consistently to protect our cherished civil liberties,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, his social media platform. Trump has praised Dhillon legal efforts in challenging social media companies, curbs on pandemic-related religious gatherings, and what he described as “woke policies” by corporations to discriminate against workers.
Dhillon has been a vocal supporter of Trump, earning national attention for her spirited defence of him.
