Riverside Regional Jail will hold ICE detainees under new agreement

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Riverside Regional Jail can now hold people detained by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under a recent agreement.

8News obtained the contact between ICE and the jail, which was first reported on by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Under the agreement, Riverside Regional Jail — located in the area of 1000 River Road in Prince George County — will provide detention services for ICE.

It will receive additional federal funding for this purpose, as well as a reimbursement per detainee per day held. Any exact dollar amounts were redacted from the contract 8News received.

The contact also states that “no public disclosures regarding this agreement” can be made without ICE approval.

No details on how many detainees the jail may be expected to house, how long they may be kept there or how they may be accommodated are included in the contract. It also does not appear to have an end date listed.

The contract 8News received, with its several redactions, is included below.

Riverside Regional Jail saw 12 inmate deaths between 2022 and 2024, per a Virginia Board of Local and Regional Jails review released in July.

There are two formal ICE detention facilities in the state of Virginia and both are located in Central Virginia. One is in the Farmville area of Prince Edward County and the other is in Caroline County.
