Press Release

Temporary traffic signal to be installed on New Kent Highway at I-64 westbound interchange

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Beginning in September, drivers can expect a temporary traffic signal at a section of New Kent Highway in New Kent County as part of the Interstate 64 Gap Segment A Widening project.

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s design-build contractor Shirley Contracting will be installing a temporary traffic signal on New Kent Highway as a continuation of the I-64 Gap Segment A Widening project in New Kent County.

According to the department, Segment A will widen about 10 miles of I-64 from two lanes to three lanes in each direction, spanning from just west of the Bottoms Bridge exit to just east of the New Kent Courthouse and Providence Forge exit.

Beginning in September, drivers should expect to see a temporary traffic signal on New Kent Highway at the I-64 westbound interchange. The westbound loop ramp to I-64 from New Kent Highway north will be closed until early 2027, according to the department.

Once the temporary traffic signal is in place, drivers will make a left turn at the temporary signal from New Kent Highway north to enter I-64 westbound.

According to the department, the adjustment will eliminate a short acceleration lane and will provide a safer work zone for both construction personnel and drivers on I-64.
