Virginia raised filmmaker is screening his new documentary at Richmond's Byrd Theater



RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia raised filmmaker, James Mottern, is set to screen his new documentary at Richmond’s Byrd Theatre this coming Monday.

The documentary, “A Beast Touch the Mountain,” follows a group of Appalachian women in Bent Mountain, Va. as they fight to protect their land and way of life away from “a greedy and corrupt” fossil fuel pipeline.

The screening will be held Monday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. at Richmond’s Byrd theater. Tickets to attend the screening are free.

The documentary was also as an official selection for the Richmond International Film Festival.

Although born in Road Island, Mottern was raised in Virginia and began his career in documentary films where he wrote and directed several series including an award winning program that dove into, “the brutal and dangerous world of international animal poaching and trafficking,” according to Mottern’s website.

The filmmaker also won a Nicholl Fellowship from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and would go on to write for multiple roduction houses such as, Mandate Pictures and Maven Pictures.

Mottern later founded his own company “Film People, LLC,  to produce and finance high-quality movies, documentaries, and television.”
