Oppn welcomes SC order against use of bulldozers, BJP says direction will be followed

New Delhi: Opposition parties welcomed the Supreme Court order against the use of bulldozers by governments, with Congress leader Supriya Shrinate saying the judgement showed a mirror to BJP’s state governments, especially in Uttar Pradesh.

“The excessive arbitrary action being taken by BJP governments across the country, whether it’s UP or MP, is illegal and should not be done. You must punish the guilty. But to demolish houses at will and mostly to divide the society is unjustified… There is nothing called bulldozer justice. There is a Constitution, there is a rule of law and that is what will prevail in this country,” she told media persons in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav welcomed the judgment, saying during an election campaign meeting in Sisamau, UP, “I thank the Supreme Court for this decision against the government… What can you expect from those who know how to demolish houses? At least today, their bulldozer will remain parked in the garage, now no one’s house will be demolished… What can be a bigger comment against the government than this?”

Trinamool Congress‘s Kunal Ghosh said that in a democracy there was no place for bulldozers and that the judgment had come at the right time. Welcoming the judgment, RJD’s Manoj Jha said that bulldozer action was being made an instrument of “dog whistle politics”. “‘Bulldozer justice’ is an oxymoron and justice and bulldozer can’t be together,” he said.

BSP chief Mayawati said she hoped that the terror of bulldozers would end after the verdict. BJP leaders assured that SC order will be followed. Madhya Pradesh deputy CM Rakesh Shukla said that any direction of SC was a kind of order and that the government was bound to follow it. J&K BJP leader Ravinder Raina termed the verdict ‘Constitutional’. However, he added, “It is to be noted that bulldozer action was taken only against those with charges of sedition and those who took the law into their hands.”
