UMass Lowell shooting: Alleged video shows armed suspect; shelter in place alert issued as key details emerge amid manhunt


A campus-wide shelter-in-place order was issued at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) on Wednesday afternoon (September 3, 2025), as officers from the UMass Lowell police and the city attempted to find a man who was seen at the university carrying what looked like a firearm, according to a notice on the university’s website.

The search for the individual is underway. Amid the manhunt, a Lowell police representative told MassLive that there was not an active shooter on campus as of 3:40 p.m. The website notice also clarified that no shootings have been reported on campus.

“Police from UMass Lowell and the city of Lowell were alerted this afternoon to reports of a male on South Campus carrying an object suspected of being a firearm. There was no report of a shooting. A campus-wide shelter in place order has been issued as officers from the UMass Lowell police and city attempt to find this individual. In a post on X, Massachusetts State Police said that state and local police responded to UMass Lowell after a video surfaced showing a person allegedly carrying a rifle walking near the Riverview Suites student dorm on Middlesex Street. They also urged all the people that if anyone has information about the man, they should call 911. The Lowell police notified the community of beefed-up police activity on Middlesex, Pawtucket, and Broadway Streets at around 4 p.m., according to MassLive. The people were asked to avoid the area.


FBI Boston acted swiftly and wrote on X that agents were at the scene as well. “FBI Boston is on scene and coordinating with our law enforcement partners. We encourage the public to remain vigilant and avoid the area,” it said in the X..Text messages were sent to the UMass Lowell community via the alert system after 2:35 p.m., urging people to shelter in place while police investigated an incident. A complete lockdown was imposed at the south campus of the university, while card access was restricted at the north and east campuses, and buses were no longer running, the messages said, according to media reports.

The screenshots of the messages surfaced on social media platforms. According to these messages, police are investigating a “weapons incident,” and authorities are searching for a 5-foot-5 Asian man wearing a gray or white sweatshirt and black shorts and carrying “a long weapon.” All classes and events at UMass Lowell have been cancelled for the rest of the day, according to the website notice.
